Ana Sanz, 26, marched for about 10 miles with a sprained ankle on Monday in Washington, D. But Sanz, an Afro-Latinx from Washington who works with women overcoming domestic and sexual violence, said it’s also time for something else — for her fellow Latinos to confront the racism and anti-blackness within the community. Proximity to “Eurocentricity and whiteness is how our ancestors survived” through oppression, a painful legacy that still prevails and needs to be eradicated, Sanz said. Although she was shaken by military-grade helicopters that felt like a “tornado,” she said, the turbulent protests did not stop long-overdue discussions about anti-black Latino racism and discrimination. White-presenting Latinos should use this time to “reconcile with the privilege” their light skin gives them in systems tainted with white supremacy and figure out ways to use it in a productive way, Sanz said. Jasmine Haywood , an Afro-Latina who has researched anti-black Latino racism, told NBC News that millennial Latinos like Sanz are looking to break cycles of internalized racism and the ways Latinos perpetuate and uphold white supremacy. Haywood said anti-blackness sentiments are “ingrained in our cultures” in part because generations of Latinos were “taught to seek partners that have a certain European or white phenotype or lighter skin to lighten their family trees. George Zimmerman, the son of an Afro-Peruvian mother and a white father, shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager.

Metrics details. HIV prevention efforts have given limited attention to the relational schemas and scripts of adult heterosexual women. These broader schemas and scripts of romantic and other sexual liaisons, partner selection, relationship dynamics, and power negotiations may help to better understand facilitators and barriers to HIV risk-reduction practices.
We conducted exploratory qualitative interviews with 60 HIV-uninfected heterosexual African-American women from rural counties in North Carolina and Alabama, and Hispanic women from an urban county in southern Florida. Data were collected for relationship expectations; relationship experiences, and relationship power and decision-making. Interview transcripts underwent computer-assisted thematic analysis. We identified two overarching relationship themes: contradictions between relationship expectations and desires and life circumstances that negated such ideals, and relationship challenges.
Why Domestic Violence Varies by Ethnicity
In , our economy experienced an economic crisis in which Black women lost , jobs —more than twice as many as the jobs gained by Black men. The ravages of the coronavirus have resulted in employment among Black women dropping 11 percentage points —more than any other group. The employment-to-population ratio is the share of the population who are working.
These findings illustrate an ugly truth: COVID is laying bare the structural inequities that compound when race and gender intersect —inequities that may be best addressed through recentering economic policy on Black women. If they are elevated through policy, including everything from paid sick leave to stimulus programs targeted directly toward them, the economy at-large will benefit.

My relationship with my identity has always been complicated. I grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where, more often than not, I was the only black face in a room. Still, my family is extremely Afrocentric, and we celebrated everything from our black skin, to our curves, to the way we styled our hair. Even in those moments when I was the only one like me, my mom and my nana never let me second-guess myself.
Despite growing up with confidence, there were times I looked around and wished I had white features. I spent a huge chunk of my young life attracted to men who preferred my white, Hispanic or lighter-skinned friends.

Overall increases in intermarriage have been fueled in part by rising intermarriage rates among black newlyweds and among white newlyweds.

Since America’s founding, the nation’s racism has made interracial relationships incredibly hard—even life-threatening. It was only 50 years ago that interracial marriage between black and whites was even made legal, which happened in my parent’s lifetime! And there are still maniacs running around today who will kill you for dating outside your race. I’m a firm believer that love doesn’t know color, religion, or creed, and I give a side eye to charlatans like Dr.
Umar Jackson who insist you should never marry a person of another race. But just because I believe in the beauty and benefits of races coming together in love, doesn’t mean the shit is easy. It’s still an uphill battle. While dating men of different races, I’ve found myself in some frustrating, awkward, unfortunate, and uncomfortable situations. From being pet like a dog “black people’s hair feels so cool and different! And I’m not alone. My brown lady friends and I run into these kinds of things more than we should, and certainly, more than we’d like.
Sometimes it has to do with the person we’re seeing, or it’s ruined by any number of outside forces like family, friends, and society. Here are some cringe-worthy stories from black women who have dated men outside their race. It’s a sad reminder that even though celebrities like Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs might make it look easy, this shit is still hard as hell.

Even though a majority of whites approve, they are somewhat less likely to approve of interracial dating than are blacks or Hispanics. Interracial and interethnic dating is not uncommon in the United States, according to self-reports in the survey. Slightly less than half of Americans say they have dated someone from a different racial or ethnic background, with Hispanics more likely than whites or blacks to say this. Younger Americans are much more likely to approve of interracial dating and to have dated someone from a different racial or ethnic background.
Gallup’s annual Minority Rights and Relations poll delved into the topic of interracial dating to see whether Americans approve or disapprove of whites and blacks dating. One half of the sample, which included larger numbers of blacks and Hispanics than in a typical poll, was asked about a black man dating a white woman. The other half was asked about a white man dating a black woman. The difference is not statistically significant. The distinction between the race of the man and woman makes little difference for blacks and Hispanics, but appears to affect whites’ approval of interracial dating to a small degree.
There are substantial differences by age in approval of interracial dating. Those in the to year-old age category are nearly unanimous in their approval, but approval declines significantly with each succeeding age category, to the point at which less than half of senior citizens approve. In addition to measuring the public’s attitudes toward interracial dating, the poll also measured the extent to which people have dated someone with similar or different racial and ethnic backgrounds from their own.

Cyn Santana found herself in some hot water with the Black community at the top of the year when an audio clip resurfaced of her boldly claiming that Black men preferred Latinas over Black women. On Wednesday December 4 , the reality star appeared on daytime talk show The Real to set the record straight and attempt to clarify her comments. As previously reported , a clip from Angela Yee’s Lip Service podcast hit in Internet in January and it featured Santana explaining that she preferred dating Black men because they put Spanish women on a pedestal, as opposed to Black women.
I do Black guys all day, sorry. I did the Spanish thing I think they’re too emotional. Black girls gonna take it personal. They gonna be like, ‘Uhh uhh!
